Now that the UFC has invaded New York City, it is looking to expand its empire. It isn’t limiting itself to America, either. In fact, it’s eyeing the opposite end of the globe.

“Russia is a massive next step for us,” UFC President Dana White said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “Russia and China. We’re very focused on that and obviously taking this thing to places that we’ve already been around the United States and building the sport here and looking for new up-and-coming stars. I love this more than anything. This is who I am, and this is what I do. I love it.”

White wants to hold UFC events in Russia and China and discover new stars from those countries.

“Both,” he said. “Opening them up, going in there, getting in on a platform like FOX here in the United States and those different countries and finding talent in those countries that can break through globally. In Russia, it’s insane. There are so many guys training in mixed martial arts in Russia, and Khabib (Nurmagomedov), who wants to fight Conor McGregor, is a huge massive star there.”

Nurmagomedov is 24-0 with eight knockouts. He has beaten Michael Johnson and Rafael dos Anjos, among others.

White said that the UFC is “very close” to hosting an event in Russia.

“When I say we’re working on it, we’re already deep into it right now,” White said. “It’s just a matter of getting a couple of things figured out here, and we’re in.”
