After finishing with a losing record for the third time in four seasons, Sonny Dykes is out at Cal. The Golden Bears fired the 47-year-old on Sunday and named offensive coordinator Jake Spavital the interim head coach.

Don’t expect Spavital to keep the gig – especially with Cal reportedly interested in Chip Kelly.

“I think (Kelly goes there),” former head coach and current CBS Sports college football analyst Houston Nutt said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “I don’t know anything, I don’t have any inside (information), but if you’re going to get rid of somebody about a month after the season is over, to me, there’s only one guy out there that kind of raises the eyebrow of, hey, we can get us a guy here that has done a lot of good things at Oregon.”

Dykes was hired in December 2012. He went 1-11 in his first year, 5-7 in his second and appeared to turn things around with an 8-5 finish and a bowl win in 2015. That success, however, was short-lived, as Cal finished 5-7 in 2016.

The Bears are now without a true head coach with Signing Day (Feb. 1) rapidly approaching.

“Here you are, three-and-a-half, four weeks away from Signing Day, and everybody is going crazy,” Nutt said. “You’re behind the 8-ball. There’s no question about it. I think it puts you way, way behind.”

In other coaching news, Nutt was on board with P.J. Fleck leaving Western Michigan for Minnesota. The 36-year-old went 13-1 this season – a far cry from his 1-11 campaign in 2013 – and will take over for Tracy Claeys, who was fired last week.

“P.J. has been a hot name, one of the hottest names there is,” Nutt said. “He’s got it going. You got to give it to him. He took his team to the Cotton Bowl. So to me, it’s him. If he feels like, ‘Hey, I’ve done all I can do at this school, I’ve left them in good shape and now I’m ready to take a big step and get to the Big Ten,’  more power to you and best of luck.”
