After serving as Carolina’s defensive coordinator for six seasons, Sean McDermott became the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in January. Buffalo hasn’t made the playoffs since 1999, but Chas Alecxih won’t be surprised if that changes in the near future.

“Obviously very, very well-deserved for him to get a head-coaching job,” the Panthers defensive tackle said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “I was really happy to see that. He’s just a great guy. That sounds a little bit bland, but it’s true. He’s an intense guy, but he’s not really a yeller and a screamer. He has always had his defense a certain way and he might get upset if you didn’t do it that way, but he’s just an easy guy to talk to.”

Alecxih, 27, arrived in Carolina in 2015 and liked McDermott from the start.

“I remember when I was fresh with the team – I think it was my first week with the team – I came in the cafeteria and I just sat down and I look up and he just sat down with me,” Alecxih recalled. “Other teams I’ve been with, you don’t always have that relationship where the D-coordinator will just sit down with someone who’s new, and (I) just had a conversation with him. He’s a really good guy, and I think he’s going to be successful there. I really do.”

In 2015, McDermott helped Carolina to a 15-1 record and Super Bowl appearance. Overall, his defenses performed well for the Panthers, as he was able to communicate with players and get the most out of them.

“Very much so,” Alecxih said. “We had our philosophies, and we obviously were a very aggressive defense. I think he likes that. D-line is getting off the ball, linebackers are playing downhill, DBs are breaking on the ball – you can just look at his numbers as defensive coordinator. The guys definitely knew what they had to do, and they did it most of the time.”
